Any Tips for Eating Out When I’m Dieting?

Randy asks:
I’ve always had a tough time eating out at restaurants, when I’m on a diet. Wondering if any Glenny’s fans have some tips for me so that I don’t get anxious when I go to restaurants. Thanks.

    Hi Randy,
Eating out is always tough. Two things I do: I always order just one main course and try to split it with my partner. Portions are usually so large in restaurants nowadays that you can always share. Also, make sure you eat with someone who can talk to! The easiest way to eat less at a restaurant is to talk more! You then eat more slowly and eat less. Good luck.

Have a strong mindset when you are looking at the menu and only read the descriptions of the healthier options. If you get a salad, always ask for a light dresing on the side and dip your fork before you go for the lettuce and veges. Plus you may not need any dressing at all with salads that come with flavorful chicken. Ask your server not to bring any bread when you order your drinks. Usually I find it hard to turn down once it is on the table, but if it’s not there, you won’t eat it. Be careful with sides, substitute the high carb, high fat options with double fresh veges.

BEFORE I GO TO ANY RESTAURANT, I USUALLY LOOK ON THE INTERNET FOR THEIR MENU AND NUTRITIONAL INFORMATION. IT’S EASIER TO MAKE A SENSIBLE CHOICE WHEN YOU ARE LOOKING AT A COMPUTER SCREEN THAN A MENU WITH THE SMELL OF FOOD ALL AROUND YOU. MOST RESTAURANTS WILL ADAPT THEIR FOOD TO YOUR NEEDS (LIKE ASKING THAT VEGETABLES BE STEAMED RATHER THAN SAUTEED).

Before I go out I always drink a Slim shake (www.bioslifeslim.com/angiesutphin) so I am not as hungry, then I usually order a grilled chicken salad, dressing on the side. No drinks, they only add calories and lower inhibitions so you may end up ordering dessert

The late Sammy Davis Jr. had the best answer. One of his fans asked: “Mr. Davis, since you’re a star in the entertainment world, you’re always invited to elegant parties where the finest food is served. How do you fight temptation and manage to stay so thin?

His answer: “I eat before I eat. That is, I have a protein sandwich (such as turkey breast, bacon and tomato, grilled cheese and tomato, etc.) at home before I go to a party. That kills my appetite. At the party I always carry a glass of club soda with a lemon twist so people don’t urge me to drink. And if I do have a drink with anyone, it’s from the glass I’m carrying.”

Got something to say?
