Well, I’m sure everyone has there favorite way to curb hunger, but here are my two favorites.
First, Eat more fiber-rich foods. It slows down digestion, so food stays in your stomach longer, making you feel satisfied longer.
Second, add some good fat, like olive oil, to your diet. Fat, too, slows the speed at which your small intestine accesses the sugars you’ve eaten. That’s why it’s better to have a little olive oil or some low-fat cheese on your bread than it is to eat the bread alone. The calorie count might be higher, but the fat contained in the olive oil will slow down the digestive process of the starch. Slowing down the digestion of carbs results in your body producing less insulin, and less insulin means a less-dramatic drop in blood sugar, which means less hunger later! At least, that’s the theory.
I’ve been maintaining a 75 lb. weight loss for 3-1/2 years now and have learned the benefits of eating my five servings of veggies/fruits a day, high fiber whole grain foods, and high protein/low fat balance.
One of the ways I have learned to curb hunger is by drinking water throughout the day. It not only helps flush out your system, but it keeps you feeling fuller through the day. Saving things such as fat free yogurts or fruit for snacks between meals not only help keep hunger at bay, but also gets in essential fruits and dairy into your day with no guilt.
The best way to control hunger is to make sure you are consuming a balanced diet with plenty of water, fruits and vegetables (fiber), protein and healthy fats. What works best for me and my weight loss clients is to drink one smoothie daily that is loaded with each of these items.
When you first start blending your smoothies, you may be a “milk and fruit only” smoothie maker, but as your body begins to crave more good nutrition, you will be able to tolerate additional ingredients and texture. Here is the recipe I used today for my smoothie:
8 oz pure water
1 small, frozen banana (freeze without the skin)
1/2 peeled, fresh beet
1 cup fresh spinach
1/2 cup frozen blueberries
2 Tbsp fresh lime juice
2 Tbsp whey protein powder
1 Tbsp ground flax seed
sweeten with 100% fruit juice
Blend the ingredients and enjoy. This smoothie provides you with plenty of protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals, healthy fats and fluid to nurture your body and keep you satisfied all morning long. When you drink a smoothie daily, you will also notice your “sweet tooth” seems to magically go away =)

One of the ways that I curb hunger is by eating small portions of protein for snacks and making sure to include protein in at least two of my main meals each day. Some of my favorite protein snacks that I allow myself between meals include low-fat cheese, beef jerky, tuna fish, and shakes made with protein powder and milk.
