Can Drinking Diet Soda Increase Your Weight?

Hi Glenny’s,

dietsoda.jpgI use diet soda to cut down on daily calorie intake. Is this a good or bad idea? I’ve actually heard that diet soda can increase weight gain. What’s the deal?
Thanks.
Diana

Interesting question. Heather Bauer, RD from Nu-Train, and author of the Wall Street diet has this to say about diet soda:

Bad idea. Most people who drink diet soda are drinking it as a replacement for water and water is always the best hydrator. Water can actually help boost metabolism.

There’s some evidence that suggests that diet drinks can even have a negative effect on weight loss. A recent study found that study animals who ate yogurt sweetened with saccharine versus those who ate it sweetened with sugar experienced weight gain. How’s that for depressing?

They’re not certain why this would happen. It could be some metabolic change stimulated by the artificial sweetener or it could be a behavioral change (I’m eating low-cal yogurt so I can have the cupcake.) Some researchers speculate that the artificial sweetener actually triggers your insulin levels and if your insulin levels are triggered you will crave and therefore eat more carbohydrates and more calories overall.

In my experience, clients who drink diet soda aren’t drinking water. Despite the fact that some research indicates that water is not important for weight loss, I have seen over and over again clients who are perfect eaters/exercisers but drink no water and can’t seem to lose an ounce. When I insist they up their water intake they lose weight. There is no better research then 10 years of experience!

If you are a diet soda addict, try to reduce your intake if you can’t cut it out entirely and make it your goal to get in 6-8 cups of water before drinking your diet soda (this trick always works because there is only so much fluid you can fit into your body : ) . Bottom line…less diet soda and more water is the way to go to reach your goal.”

My Nutritionist told me to stop all diet sodas as they can be harmful. Being diabetic I do not eat or drink anything with sugars; however, I love the carbonation in a drink. Safeway (Vons) makes a non-sodium drink that is their brand of Seltzer. I drink a great deal of this during the day which I find very satisfying especially here in the desert southwest in summer.

hello there, im a massage therapist in a health spa and have had this question come up a lot. from my experience and knowledge i have come to find that diet sodas are more harmful to the body as a whole than a regular soda because of the affects it has on your liver and lymphatic system. when u are drinking a normal soda it conatins a lot of calories and enourmous amounts of sugar which is not good for weight loss, howeve; your body is able to recgnize sugar as a natural ingredient and can digest it properly. with foods that have artificial sweetner and additives that our bodies are not made to be consuming you are going to cause yourself to retain water.

your liver is your bodys cleansing organ which takes a lot longer to process synthetics than natural foods, when it is overloaded with syntehtics it expells the excess inot our fat tissue. our bodies defense is to send water to dilute the areas creating things like cellulite and water retention especially in areas around our lymph nodes(hips thighs and butt most common for women). so the number will take a lot longer to go down on your scale if you are consuming a lot of diet drinks and are not drinking water.

i recomend making sure that you are getting plenty of exercise throughout the day to increase circulation and stick to natural foods and drinks, even if there are a few more calories your body will be healthier as a whole and u will feel a lot better for it!

i apologize for my spelling errors..

Got something to say?
