Curing My Addiction to Soda?

Sally asks:
I’ve been addicted to soda for 20 years. I drink the equivalent of a 2-liter bottle every day. What tips do you have for weaning myself off of high calorie beverages, like soda? I know it’s unhealthy and also not good for my diet, but I have a hard time curing the craving. Any ideas?

Sally, have you tried switching to seltzer water? I too love soda, so I always keep seltzer water handy. When I’m craving soda or some drink I shouldn’t have — i.e., beer — I grab some seltzer and drink it. Just drinking a carbonated drink seems to help curb the craving for the soda.

If you like flavor in your bubbly water, then you can use sugar free syrups made to flavor drinks. At one point, I had almost 60 flavors in the house, so I could satisfy just about any flavor craving. I even ordered them all online!

There are also many wonderful “to go” sugar-free drink mixes for water. One company even sweetens their berry and tangerine mixes with stevia!

I recomend drinking diet sodas when you really want to drink some. However, the best solution is to start drinking lots of water. At the begining you will feel like taking medicine, since it tastes bad, but you’ll get used to it. On top of that, you’ll feel really healthy doing this

Here Ye on the soda water. I do that too. Some of the flavored ones are really good too. the water idea is even better. Add a little fruit juice (not fruit beverage) or squeeze a lemon or lime into it as well. I also understand that soda, diet or regular, can prohibit the absorption of calcium, so can actually have a weakening effect on bone. Beware if you have or are at risk for osteporosis.

I agree with marty about the fruit juice and seltzer water because I am strict vegetarian and I haven’t drank a soda in 20+ years but when I get a taste for something like soda I’ll drink 1/2 fruit juice + 1/2 seltzer water or once in a while I might drink a fruit juice spritzer that you can get at any natural health food store.

I also was addicted to diet soda for even longer than 20 years. It became my basic beverage, instead of water! I read so many bad things about it over the years and even tried (unsuccessfully) to give it up several times. Finally, last year when I read report that they thought diet soda actually CONTRIBITED to weight gain because it tricked the mind into thinking you were consuming something sweet and upped the need for more, I did finally give it up. I drink seltzer with a tiny bit of 100% cranberry juice for flavor. It took me about a month to stop the craving for diet soda, but it is now gone! As a matter of fact I had a diet soda when it was the only beverage available when I was very thirsty and guess what? I hated the taste! So if I can quit, you can too! Good luck.

Anyone who is suffering from a diet soda addiction needs to know about ZEVIA, the natural alternative to diet soda. ZEVIA has all the pop and fizz of a diet soda, but NO calories and NO artificial ingredients. ZEVIA uses Stevia which is a natural herb from the rain forest hundreds of times sweeter than sugar, but no calories! I am a HUGE fan of glenny’s chips (the soy crisps), and the Zevia/Glenny’s snack combo is awesome. One REALLY great thing about Zevia is that we have a COLA flavor, so for people seeking a natural, zero calorie “diet coke” replacement, try the Zevia Natural Cola. The other flavors are Natural Twist (lemon lime), Natural Orange, and Natural Ginger RootBeer. Please take a look at Zevia – this product was created for people trying to Kick the Diet Soda Habit! http://www.zevia.com

I am also a diet soda-holic and recently have been putting Crystal Light packets
into seltzer to satisfy my carbonated cravings !! Tastes great.

Got something to say?
