Daily Flossing Can Add 6.4 Years To Your Life!

Recent research shows that maintaining good dental hygiene not only gives you a better smile, it can actually add to your lifespan. In his book RealAge Dr. Michael Roizen, MD lists flossing among activities—as well as exercising and quitting smoking—that can increase your lifespan by up to 6.4 years.

So, where’s the connection? One theory is that the bacteria that builds dental plaque can enter the bloodstream and add to the buildup of inflammatory arterial plaque that causes heart disease. Teeth and gums get their blood supply from the heart, just like every other part of our bodies. Further research has shown a link between dental bacteria and stroke and diabetes. It seems that keeping those pearly whites healthy is integral to overall health.

Then there are the obvious bonuses : a whiter smile, fewer trips to the dentist and less of your income diverted to dental health problems. So, make sure to keep up with your daily flossing: it’s one activity that could make you, your dentist and your heart healthier and happier.
