Do Detox Diets Work?

Debbie asks:
I’m wondering if anyone here has tried any of the detox diets like Master Cleanse? Do they work? Thanks.

I don’t think there is evidence that detox diets work. Also, there is a danger with detox diets since they can cause muscle breakdown and they don’t give you important vitamins and minerals, or enough protein which is key when you are losing weight.

Actually Heather Bauer of Nu-Train says:
“Our body naturally cleanses itself through the kidneys and liver, so a diet that promises to “cleanse” really isn’t necessary. Detox diets can also make you feel lightheaded, lethargic and cranky – making you not so fun to be around (can anyone spell bad breath?). Our recommendation: “cleanse” your diet by introducing more whole fruits and vegetables and by avoiding refined carbohydrates such as white rice, white bread and sugar, which provide minimal nutrients and can be calorically-dense.”

I’ve acutally done the diet before, so let me tell you… it does work. I lost 8 pounds in 6 days. BUT it’s not worth it. Once you go back to the way you normally eat, you’ll gradually gain that weight back. We, as humans naturally eat, which we should because that’s where we get all of our nutrients from, so when you take that away, it’s a real shocker to the system. I felt so tired everyday and didn’t feel like doing anything. During that time, because you are not eating, all you think about is food and it then becomes an obsession (very unhealthy). I wouldn’t suggest anyone to do this and if anything just watch what types of food you eat and the portion sizes. Workout on a regular basis (3-4 times/week at least 30 minutes) and have a splurge meal once a week, so you give yourself at least some slack.

Just following a high fiber diet complete with lean proteins and unsaturated fats, your body will ‘cleanse’ itself. Try to eat more natural foods and look for items with very few ingredients listed, eat clean. For more weight loss tips go to http://www.bioslifeslim.com/angiesutphin

Just thought I’d add my two cents :) I’ve done a “detox” recently (and did the same one about 2 years ago) and had great results with it. It is a 3-day fruit flush, but also includes veggies and protein. I never felt tired or weak. I lost some weight in the process (about 5 pounds), but I know that weight loss was from water and the “drudge” in my body getting cleaned out (so, I was not disappointed when I gained a couple of pounds back.. because it is meant to flush your system, not a miracle weight-loss diet!!). I find it was a great kick-start to my healthier eating habits. For those who want to check it out.. it’s at this web address.. http://www.jayrobb.com/cat_fruitFlushDietEbook.asp. Good luck with your healthy eating!!

I did the Isogenix detox diet for a month and lost 20 lbs, but it cost me about $550 so that is about $25 a pound. The good news is that I kept it off, but it was expensive and hard.

How can you justify $550.00 a month to lose a few pounds? I find that rather dumb. I understand that a person has to stay on the Isegenix diet for the rest of your life, or you will gain it back………..is this true?

Got something to say?
