Exercise As A Food Group?

If you think about your diet, as dieters often do, you generally think of some kinds of food groups. You need to get more veggies, eat more whole grains, go easy on the sweets (if you haven’t cut them out completely!), but what about exercise? Where does exercise fit in your overall diet?

It’s easy, and common, to think of exercise as an addition of some kind. You’re dieting and you’re trying to exercise more. You’re dieting and you know that you should be exercising more too. But what if exercise, instead of being an “addition” to your weight-loss or weight-control goals, it was a food group? What if you thought, I need to eat more veggies and more whole grains and take in 3 or more 30 minute walks a week? What if you looked at exercise as an intrinsic instead of extrinsic part of your diet; that is, what if exercise was something to be consumed as well, like an apple a day or servings of whole grains?

Looking at exercise as a consumable product can help motivate dieters; just like you need your fruits and veggies every day, you need your half-hour walk. So find something active you enjoy doing and add it to your day, just like you would add a salad at lunch or a healthy after-dinner treat—a Glenny’s 100 Calorie Brownie comes to mind. Making exercise an integral part of your diet plan can only help those pounds fly off, while cardiovascular strength and overall health. So make it a food group: something you must have every day, or every other day, to support your weight-loss goals.
