Hellooo? Are you there? This is your body speaking…
…and it wants you to know that you’re not really hungry, you’re stressed out or angry or sad or just plain bored. You’re eating in reaction to something that has nothing to do with me! I am your body, and I’m telling you, I’m not hungry. Why are you eating?
All joking aside, really listening to your body is key to dieting success. If you find yourself reaching into that bag of chips again and again, or snacking your way through every day without even thinking about what you’re eating, you’re probably over-eating…and your body knows it. The next time you reach for those chips, stop and think, “Am I really hungry?” Are you? If you are, try a small serving or better yet, put the chips away and replace them with a healthier snack, like Glenny’s American Fries or Spud Delites. But first ask yourself: are you really hungry? When’s the last time you drank some water? Research has shown that we’re considerably more thirsty than we are hungry, and if you don’t remember the last time you had a glass, try that first. Just have a glass of water. Feel better? If so, then you weren’t really hungry; if not, have a small snack.
Our emotions, especially when connected with food, can really wreck even the plans of the best-intentioned dieter. The best way to stop this vicious cycle is to really think about whether you’re hungry or bored, stressed, ticked off, upset, cranky, tired, etc. Instead of comforting yourself with food, take a walk. Get away from the desk for a few minutes. Step outside and take a few deep breaths. Ebven just closing your eyes and breathing deeply, disconnecting from the world for awhile, can make a huge difference in how you’re perceiving hunger. And if you’re really hungry, well, your body will tell you that, too. And then, you should nourish it. Feed only your hunger, and reap the rewards! Get used to listening to your body.
