Can Cold Cuts be a Healthy Choice?
Donna asks,
I’ve read presliced deli lunch meats provide a good source of protein and are good for when I’m on the go. But, I’m wondering if that applies to all cold cuts? Are some cold cuts better than others and which ingredients should I avoid? Thanks.

Got something to say?

Cold cuts are great for on the go. I’m sure others have their favorites, but I’m a fan of boiled ham.
I think most of all it’s important to avoid processed meats with fillers. Fillers are carbohydrate additives that are used to hold the meat together and reduce production costs. Look for modified food starch, wheat starch, and cornstarch in the ingredient list, and avoid products made with these fillers unless they appear near the end of the ingredient list. If this is the case, the amount of starch is minuscule.
Enjoy!
I like black pepper turkey–tasty with low fat mayo–lettuce and whole grain bread!!
Go for the “LOW SODIUM” cold cuts. Typically Boars Head has a line of low sodium ham, turkey and there Roast Beef is low in sodium, all three are low in calories/fat and have great protein values. Also Boars Head tasts GREAT. There are a few organic choices you can make, that do not contain all the artifical preservatives that most cold cuts contain. If you go to Freshdirect.com, and then so a search for “cold cuts” you will see a variety of cold cuts they carry, and you can click on “Nutrional Value” for any selection and see what they contain and compare to other brands.
