How Do I Slow Down My Eating and Enjoy My Meal?
Sam asks:
I know it’s important to eat slowly if you want to lose weight on a diet, but in this hectic world it’s very difficult for me to sit down and enjoy a meal. I tend to rush thru meal and then of course I overeat. Does anyone have any tips to share to help me slow down while I eat? Thanks.

Got something to say?

Hi Sam,
Yes, it’s true, studies have shown that people who eat in a rush are more prone to overeating. It takes time for your brain to register that your stomach is full. So if you eat really quickly, there is no time for your brain to register that you’re full and you’ll overeat.
There are many ways to slow down, but one simple thing to do is to make sure you eat at least one meal at a table. Even though it’s hard, don’t eat on the go, or at your desk at work. At least for one meal, go to a table. Sit down. Take your time. Your food will taste better, you’ll eat less, and your weight loss will show the results.
Good luck.
I found that if I read at the table during my lunch hour or make a shopping list, I tend to eat slower bc my mind is on something else. It is important to make sure that you put what you are eating on a plate beforehand so you know exactly how much you are eating. Ex. Do not eat out of a snack bag! You will have no idea how much you are eating if you are busy doing something else!
Hi Sam,
I have always cut my food into small pieces (like my mom did for me when I was very young), and eat one at a time, while savoring the flavour of it. I probably chew my food a bit longer too because my friends complain I eat too slow.
I drink a lot of water while I eat, and all day long, too. I have always been a big water drinker. I like tea, coffee, and juice at times, too. Soda I never really cared for.
When you feel the signal of your stomach in a slight pain (stomach stretching), you should put your eating utensils down and put what’s left on your plate in the refrigerator or freezer.
Most of my life, I have always known the feeling of when I am close to being full. There are times when I over ate, but then I go back to not over eating.
I will do my best never to eat on the go. Eating that way usually makes me sick.
There are medications that make you gain weight, as I know this first-hand, and even if you eat less, it is pretty hard to lose weight.
Depending on your bone structure, how tall you are, and your activity level, you may be able to eat a little bit more than another. Your metabolism also has a bit to do weight loss.
As long as I can, I will NOT eat or drink anything with artificial sweetners (such as diet soda, diet cookies, etc.). I think they are even worse to eat. I like to snack on carrots or fuji apples, for example. Glenny’s soy crisps are good to snack on. I am not much of a junk food eater (probably because my dad ate lots of candy when he said he was on a diet, and my sister and I would nag him to stop eating it).
Do your best NOT to take seconds unless you know you are absolutely still hungry. Also, I do not always eat dessert, and if I eat an appetizer, I will either share it, or take home what I don’t eat.
I would be glad to give you other tips, or even assist you to lose weight the right way, but I don’t know how to contact you. Maybe you could call Glenny’s and tell them to give your e-mail or phone number to me (since they have my e-mail tag).
I wish you the best of success and happiness always!
