How To Make Your “Off Limits” Foods Into Treats!

When you’re dieting, the urge to make certain foods off-limits, as in, completely banned from the pantry, verboten, flagged with yellow caution tape and stored in the freezer (or tossed in the nearest Dumpster) until the end of your diet, is easy to succumb to. Dieting makes us want to control our eating, and “controlling” for us humans means tackling those crave-able foods head-on. But there are better ways of doing it than making them off-limits. Try these tips instead.

-Eat just a little: This is virtually impossible to do with the whole cake, pan of brownies, or bag of chips in front of us so: measure out a serving, put the rest away, put the serving on a nice plate, sit down in a calm, pleasing environment and eat it. Think about the flavor, the texture, the taste you enjoy so much. Really take the time and indulge in that portion and then, go about your day.

-Understand what “one serving: is: even if you have to get a food scale to do it, make sure you fully understand how much a serving size really is. It’s not really a treat if you eat four or five servings all at once, so make sure you can correctly gauge a serving—warning, serving sizes may appear smaller than you’d like them to be!—before you begin to indulge. Then, enjoy the indulgence.

-Substitute a healthy treat for the “ideal” treat you had in mind: if you’re eating wholesome treats and snacks, you’re already aligning your diet plan for better success. Crave chips?
