How To Turn Down Food When You’re A Guest?
Hey there Glenny’s:
When you’re a guest at someone’s home, what do you do when you’re served fattening foods? For example, the friend serves a sandwich with mayonnaise, a salad with regular dressing, and/or dessert. I was taught that the only polite thing to do is clear your plate. Is there a graceful way to turn down food when one is dieting?

Got something to say?

This is the toughest thing, for sure. I never say “No thank you, I’m on a diet”. Do that and immediately everyone will likely chime in, telling you why you should eat everything in sight. And then they’ll be watching closely to see what you do (or don’t) eat. In these situations, I’ve found that the best thing is to say nothing and just fill your plate with the healthier foods, so you don’t have room for the unhealthy stuff. Good luck!
When we are invited to some ones home for a meal, I try to up front tell them I have some eating restrictions due to health issues (which is true if I don’t lose weight I will not be healthy!!) Well if it’s health issues, that takes on a different tone as they don’t want to make you sick or unhealthier!!! Just try to be honest with people before you arrive (if possible) otherwise, just take small portions and do the best you can. Good luck!
Will Power! Don’t turn it down just fill up on the healthy stuff. For plan B, just in case there is no healthy stuff, try to eat as little as possible and eat your normal dinner when you get home. Plan C, bring a healthy dish that you know u will eat, and the host will think you were being very kind and thoughtful.
I always say I have an upset stomach.
