Olive Oil to Lose Weight?

Lisa asks:

I’ve read in several places that having more olive oil can help me lose weight? Does anyone know why? Thanks.

    hi Lisa,
I’m not sure olive oil helps you lose weight directly. I think it is more about using olive oil in place of other harmful oils. If use olive oil in healthy amounts in place of the harmful fats you may be used to, you will lose weight.

From what I understand, the kind of fat that olive oil is mostly made of (monounsaturated fat) is considered good fat, since it actually lowers your levels of the bad, LDL cholesterol and blood fats called triglycerides. The fats you’ll be avoiding (saturated fat) raise those levels. This is probably why olive oil is considered healthy.

Dieters often get rid of ALL fat from their diets, thinking that will help them achieve their goal faster. The body NEEDS some fat, the best being the oil found in olive oil and nuts. If someone is hungry, a handful of nuts or something else with a healthy fat (and preferably some protein) in it will help keep them sated for much longer than a 100-calorie pack of some sweet, lo-fat, sugar-laden snack. Adding some olive oil to your daily diet will help keep you from that overwhelming urge to snack on whatever-you-can-find.

Got something to say?
