Portion Control Tips

Hi Glenny’s Fans,

How can I stop myself from overeating during meals? I have such a hard time controlling portions, and I go to brunch buffets several times a month. Please give me your best tips. Thanks.

Peggy

My trick is to portion control is to start making myself feel full before the meail. So I drink a couple of glasses of water before I eat. I also eat small meals throughout the day so I never sit down starving. Hope that helps.

At buffets, I start with the healthiest stuff, and lots of it — fruits and veggies! Buffets usually have tons of fresh fruit and vegetables available, and it can be quite a treat, especially if the choices include items that you would not typically buy for home, because of being out of season and/or too expensive. Make yourself a whole plate of the good stuff! Of course, you still have to watch out for oil-based marinades or other preparations that would add more fat/calories than you wish to consume. By the time I get to the more caloric options, I am already fairly full from my “appetizer”, and less prone to taking large quantities.

At home, I do more or less the same – if I get home around dinner time, starving and feeling about to stray, I will zap a big bowl of broccoli in the microwave and eat that right away. That way, I can take my time with the remainder of the dinner preparation without feeling unbearably hungry.

An easy way to make portions smaller is get a smaller plate! Either a small 9″ dinner palte or a large salad plate. You still can have everything but just smaller portions. This also works well if you have a senior in your household. So often they don’t eat a lot and if they have a smaller plate to fill they may eat a little more of somethings.

I have a small cup of a vegetable soup before dinner. It fills you up with healthy veggies and then you’re too full for pasta or fries.

The above ideas are great, but I am much like you in that when I go to a buffet, I buffet. Although the healthy options are great, I want to sample everything. My suggestions: because you go several times a month, why don’t you change the place you go to eat. Go to a restaurant that has its own portion control (non buffet). Then, ask for toppings, dressings, etc on the side so you can dress your own food. OR Have a get together potluck with the people you go out to eat with. Have a get together at one of your houses and everyone bring a different dish. Make the potluck themed liked everyone brings a dish that incorporates fruit or healthy dishes, etc…..that way you will feel much less guilty about it.
If you must buffet, then I agree with everyone above. : )

Outside of this, make sure you consistently eat throughout the day (small meals) so you do not ever get to the point of starvation, which is when overeating happens.

Drinking Bios Life Slim (an all natural supplement) prior to your two biggest meals, it helps to keep you feeling full and satisfied, helps to regulate your blood sugar levels which eliminates cravings and increase energy, which in turn helps to burn fat naturally and eat less. email silver519@hotmail.com for more information

I would start with a bunch of (especially green) veggies and some lean meat at your buffet. Make small trips and sit and talk while you eat each plate and then between them as well.

A general good tip is to get in the practice of taking smaller bites. You get just as much flavor from half a bite in most cases! In fact, it helps you appreciate the flavor more.

The longer it takes you to eat your first plate, the sooner you will start to feel full – that’s when SELF-control comes in over portion control.

Does anyone go to a restaurant for something good that is Gluten-free – such as a bakery item or good soup?

I am hoping to help a chain restaurant expand it’s gluten-free options for popular consumption.

Would appreciate learning what you like when you go out that keeps everyone happy – including you afterwards :)
