Rev Up Your Hunger For Diet Success!

Successful dieting can be really fun, if you decide to see it that way. Instead of counting calories, weighing portions of food, constantly weighing yourself, or beating yourself up for “slip-ups”—the cookies here, the chips there, the candy bar yesterday, the ice cream last night—try to focus on what having a good diet will do for you. Focusing on the deprivation and pitfalls doesn’t make dieting any easier…so choose to focus on the good things you’re achieving with your diet, like colors and flavors and variety!

Making smart diet decisions is a huge step towards a healthier you; the way to make them work is to focus on what you can have instead of what you can’t. Take a long stroll through the produce section of your supermarket and focus on the colors, the anticipated tastes, of fresh fruits and vegetables. Ask a produce clerk if you can sample something that looks delicious—most will be happy to cut a wedge of just about anything for you. Try at least one new item—the newer the better. If you’ve never heard of it before, pick it up and put it in your cart. Take it home and figure out what to make with it. Ever try a starfruit or a sunchoke? Now might be the time. Livening up your diet with a variety of fresh food choices makes it difficult to feel deprived, because you’re exploring a whole new world beyond what you would normally go in and buy. So rev up your hunger and hit the produce section of your local grocery store or fresh market. Touch things, smell things, and if you think you want to try it, now’s the time! Making fresh, new choices and learning healthy ways to prepare them—even if it all goes into a big salad that sates your appetite and gives you a new perspective on produce—can make dieting really, really fun. After all, what’s the point of deprivation when you can really nourish yourself to success?
