Staying Slim and Enjoying Ice Cream?
Carrie asks:
It’s summer time and I find it hard to forgo the occasional ice cream treat. Any tips on how to stay slim and still treat myself to ice cream?

Got something to say?

Wow, that’s a tough one. Of course everything is OK in moderation.
I think with ice cream a key trick is to forgo the cone. Those delicious waffle cones can pile on nearly 160 calories. So it’s best to just avoid the cone altogether and ask to serve your ice cream in a cup!
Obviously, fudge and syrup are no nos. A serving of hot fudge topping adds 150 extra calories plus trans fat
Look forward to see what others do to enjoy their ice cream while not packing on calories.
Skinny cow!!! Cones for 140 calories and they are delicious (although pricey). Also, Breyer’s Free is pretty good, too. However, my issue is portion control, so I love the Skinny Cow choices. There are also other companies who make lower calorie/fat novelties. One company that comes to mind is Blue Bunny’s Sweet Freedom line. When all else fails, you can go for a Froze Fruit all fruit frozen treat.
Well, I love ice cream. And, I don’t just want a scoop in a dish. I want the fudge sauce, sprinkles, and whipped cream. It’s not like I eat it every day – I make it a treat every couple of weeks. I agree that moderation is the key. Daily exercise and good nutrition is a MUST. I removed 103 pounds in 2006, and I have maintained it for 2 years now. I believe that small indulgences every couple of weeks helps me to maintain. I can deal with “running” and “veggies” when I know that every once in a while I get to have ice cream – with the “works”!!
Try Arctic Zero! It’s a frozen dessert I order from Amazon. An ENTIRE PINT of chocolate peanut butter is only 128 calories! They also have vanilla maple and strawberry/banana! Enjoy!
I’d say try Frozen Yogurt, like TCBY or even Ben & Jerry’s. It’s just as good as ice cream, but lower in fat and calories (than standard ice cream) AND you get the benefit of the active cultures.
here’s another alternative that everyone likes that i’ve told…take a container of fat free cool whip and scoop out 1/4 of the container and put in a glass bowl or cup and put in freezer for a couple of hours…comes out the same texture as ice cream…top with sugar free syrup, granola, fruit, etc…only has100 calories, 6 grams sugar and no fat eaten plain…
the best option to avoid overdoing anything is to go to a local ice cream/yogurt shop and get what you want there. No tempations at home and you get out and can enjoy your treat how you like it without overindulging.
Low fat yogurt, low fat and lactose free ice cream or sorbet can be substituted for regular ice cream with very little loss of flavor. If you don’t add sprinkles, syrup, nuts, etc., it’s actually a low-calorie snack that counts as a milk option on your diet.
There are a variety of more nutritious and more ethical “ice creams” on the market – there are those made from soy, from rice, from coconut, from cashew, and even just from fruit – if you live in the Los Angeles area, on Monday, September 7th, (Labor Day), Veg Kids, (www.VegKids.org), is offering free for kids, (and adults are welcome to come indulge with them too), an END-OF-SUMMER-VEGAN-ICE-CREAM-PARTY & BACK-TO-SCHOOL-PREP-SESSION in the West San Fernando Valley : )
I never buy regular ice cream now. I buy Weight Watchers, Skinny Cow, and Blue Bunny cones/fudge bars, etc. Example – one Weight watchers fudge bar is only 1 point each. If you are following Weight Watchers points counting, 1 point is nothing. And, they are absolutely delicious. A little expensive, but to me, they are worth it.
We go to the local ice cream shop 4-5 times per summer and get a baby scoop, which is about the size a normal scoop was 50 years ago We get it in the regular cake cone, which has only about 20 calories. My theory: if you start with a small serving you are just as satisfied when it’s gone as when you start with a large serving. There are two reasons: first, by the time you’ve licked the ice cream your senses and your stomach are satisfied; second, your eyes see that the treat is gone so your brain registers “end.” I’ve found this works with anything. I cut down from eating half a 12-ounce bag of chips to being happy with a small handful frim the very first time I tried it by simply putting the small amount in a bowl and shutting the bag in the cabinet. I never missed the larger amount – and never miss the mountain of ice cream I see others eating.
ARCTIC ZERO!!!!! you can have the ENTIRE PINT for a mere 150 calories, and it is really delicious too. they have chocolate, chocolate peanut butter, vanilla maple, strawberry, chocolate mint, cookies and cream (my favorite is vanilla maple).
