Take It Slowly (but don’t Fletcherize)

While there’s no need to take this to the kind of extremes that Horace Fletcher did (check out our post on Crazy Diet Plans for more details), considerable evidence shows that slowing down while you eat not only allows you to enjoy your meals more, it can actually help you eat less. Here’s why: when we’re fully engaged in eating, we tend to slow down and not to succumb so easily to “mindless eating”. This slowing-down effect also allows our bodies to process food as we eat it, so we’re less likely to stuff ourselves. Our brain gets the message that we’re full, and starts sending out “STOP!” signals before we overeat…if we just slow it down a little.

Slowing it down also helps us enjoy the food we’re eating more. By savoring each bite, soaking up the deliciousness of every morsel, our meals transform into truly satisfying endeavors that nourish the body, the mind and the heart. And if we’re already taking the time to prepare or purchase foods that are wholesome and good for us, why shouldn’t we be enjoying them…down to the last bite?
