Think In Smaller Portions

Portion sizes have ballooned recently, especially in restaurants, meaning that some meals contain an entire Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) of calories (2,000 – 2,500). Want to enjoy eating out without the worry of all those extras adding up? Try these tips so that you can enjoy your evening out and stick to your diet goals as well!

-Have a cup of soup first. Know you’ll be eating out later? Don’t set yourself up for a diet disaster by going out hungry. Have a small cup of soup, such as miso or tomato, to calm down your appetite for dinner.

-Drink a full glass of water. No time for soup? Extra time before your meal arrives? Power down that urge to dive into the bread basket by drinking a full glass—at least eight ounces—of water, either instead of or in addition to the soup. Most of the time when we think we’re hungry, it’s really thirst kicking in. Quench it with a full glass of water and enjoy your evening out!

-Stay out of the bread basket. You knew it was coming after the last one…stay away from the extra carbs. Yes, the restaurant offers it free…because it’s cheap and it fills people up and makes them order less of the expensive stuff. Do yourself a favor: pull the water glass in closer, and put the bread basket at the other end of the table.

-Ask for half. That’s right, ask the waiter to portion your meal for you…it makes it a lot easier, and you have a nice to-go lunch, already wrapped up for you! Just ask your waiter to wrap up half your meal before serving it to you, and grab the doggie bag to go. Now all you need to worry about is: who’s getting the check?
